World Heritage ambassadorship took center stage in Karlskrona
What does it mean to be an ambassador for a World Heritage Site like Karlskrona? What has been done in this regard previously, and how do we move forward to create sustainable ambassadorship? These and other questions were discussed on stage in the Karlskrona Concert Hall today, August 28 2018.
About 20 representatives from different organizations took part in the workshop, where DUNC project manager Niklas Carlsson, project assistant Rebecka Jonasson Gjerpe and World Heritage Coordinator Elena Peverada led the discussions.
After three hours of fun and intense discussions the participants had shared information, learned from each other and raised new questions. Some of the conclusions were that:
- There is a need for strong and long-term organization of ambassadors with clear responsibilities defined so as to make it sustainable over time. Local schools need to be involved and teachers encouraged to be ambassadors A basic education for those who want to become “official” ambassadors is required. This will be the next step in this process.
- We need to recognize that there are those ambassadors that we educate and work with, but also that everyone who talks about Karlskrona in a positive manner is also an unofficial ambassador
- Those who become ambassadors need to feel a bit pampered and special, and given some sort of benefits (not monetary) We should take advantage of the fact that DUNC is multinational and make sure that the ambassadors get the opportunity to meet each other across the south Baltic.
We will collect all the notes from the workshop and invite the participants to join us in creating a concrete program for ambassadors, with some sort of education and long term organization.
